Sanjay Dutt moves from Gandhigiri to Freedom

Sanjay Dutt has opened a new chapter in his life. From playing a gangster in a dozen odd films to advocating 'gandhigiri' in Lage Raho Munnabhai, he would now be marching to a different beat with Freedom, a film which would take audience through the journey of India from the 70s to the current times. The film would be directed by Vivek Agnihotri and has already been given a nod of approval by Sanjay Dutt as well as Madhavan. Hunt for the remainder of the principal cast is on.

Confirms Vivek Agnihotri, the man behind Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal (John Abraham, Arshad Warsi, Bipasha Basu) and Chocolate (Anil Kapoor, Irrfan Khan, Tanushree Dutta), "Yes, Freedom is happening for sure. The principal cast is more or less finalised and talks with Sanjay Dutt and Madhavan are progressing quite well as they are in the final stages. Sanjay is out of town and I would be meeting him soon after his return to take a closure on the formalities. I am also keen on signing Mohan Lal for the film and have approached him as well. It would be great if he consents because the film will certainly befit his standing as an actor who only does meaningful cinema."

Looking at the subject of Freedom, it does hint of being meaningful cinema with a commercial appeal to it. Describing the film as a political thriller that gives a blow by blow account of modern day India during last three decades, Vivek gets emotional by calling Freedom as a dream come true, "This is a story that I have been waiting to tell for years now. Though Chocolate and Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal happened in the interim, I was always keen to bring Freedom for Indian viewers. The beauty of the subject is that it stays on to be as topical as ever as it starts in the 70s and takes us to the current times. Even if I had to make Freedom in 2020, it will still retain its charm because there would always be newer episodes to tell from the decade gone by."

Apparently, Vivek completely distanced himself from the outside world while writing the film. "I worked with Prasoon Joshi on the script for close to 6 months. After that I went to Himalayas for a couple of months and have just returned after locking the final draft. It has been over two years since Dhan Dhan Dhan Goal and I am raring to go. However, if you ask me whether I am tired then I would say 'No'. Writing Freedom has been such an enriching experience and even if I am required to spend a couple of more years to add more to it, I won't mind."

For Sanjay Dutt, it would be yet another saga other than his under production Lamhaa (directed by Rahul Dholakia) where he would be a part of a topical tale. Though in 2009 he saw success coming his way via a comic route (All The Best), 2010 could well open a new chapter in his life with Freedom following next. In the current decade, most of the films where he has been shown on the right side of the law (Shootout At Lokhandwala, Dus, Kurukshetra, Mission Kashmir) have been successful at the box office. Are we looking at him as a law keeper once again in Freedom?

"It would be too early to divulge his role though I can assure that it pretty much justifies his heavy weight presence", assures Vivek, "He would be present from start to finish of the film and would remain a part of the narrative through all the decades."

Sanjay-Vashu fall out over broken promise

Sanjay Dutt and producer Vashu Bhagnani have had a serious fight because the latter broke his promise of re-launching Sanjay’s good friend

Dharam Oberoi’s daughter Neha. To make matters worse, Vashu replaced Neha without informing the actor.

Consequently, a dismayed Sanjay has walked out of Vashu’s film, Faltu, which is also supposed to re-launch the producer’s son Jackky Bhagnani.

Our source said, “Sanjay and Vashu have always been on very good terms. Sanjay even did an item number without charging any money in Kal Kissne Dekha. Sanjay agreed to star in Faltu only because it was supposed to be the re-launch film for his close friend and manager Dharam Oberoi’s daughter, Neha, who had earlier starred in the tanked Woodstock Villa opposite Sikandar Kher. But while Sanjay was busy promoting All The Best, Vashu went ahead and signed on the current Miss India-World Pooja Chopra, and unceremoniously dropped Neha from his film. Sanjay was furious when he got to know about this and told Vashu that since he had failed to keep his word, he too won’t keep his promise. Vashu is now trying to get Anil Kapoor to replace Sanjay.”

Vashu said, “I had not even signed Sanju as the script is not ready yet. Sanju has to read the script and then decide. I have always maintained that he is a friend and has helped us with Kal Kissne Dekha. We will finalise everything only when the script is ready.”

Sanjay’s spokesperson confirmed that he is no longer part of Vashu’s film. He said cautiously, “Sanju opted out of the film due to date problems.”

Finally the D-day has arrived and it's the turn of Mumbaikars to exercise their vote today (30th April, 2009) for the on-going Elections. Even our B-town celebs weren't behind when it came to exercising their vote. The Mumbai North-Central constituency (comprising Bandra and the adjoining areas) was abuzz with activity as it saw some of the biggest Bollywood stars come down and exercise their vote.

A couple of days ago 'Baadshah of Bollywood' Shah Rukh Khan was busy motivating his team 'Knight Riders' at the IPL matches in South Africa. However, as a responsible citizen of the country, King Khan especially flew down to cast his vote. The actor was dressed in a grey tee and was accompanied by his wife Gauri. Considering the way his team has been performing at the IPL matches, we're sure Khan thought its best to come back to Mumbai as soon as possible.

Aamir Khan has always been very active in supporting social causes. In fact the actor recently was also part of a Government initiative encouraging to citizens to vote. Hence, it was no surprise to see the actor turn up to cast his vote. Aamir, dressed in a simple white kurta, happily posed for the shutterbugs and showed the kala tikka on his ungli

Often referred to as the 'First Family of Bollywood', the Bachchans comprising of Amitabh, Jaya, Abhishek and Aishwarya turned up in full attendance to cast their vote. It was interesting to see all of them dressed in white. AB Jr. even wore a tee relevant to the occasion. However, while posing for the media persons Amitabh, Abhishek and Aishwarya happily showed their inked fingers even as Jaya tried to hide her face in embarrassment. Now ...don't ask why?

The crowds went crazy when 'Munnabhai' Sanjay Dutt walked in to cast his vote. Sanju may have been denied a chance to contest the elections but he did exercise his right to vote as a citizen of India. After all that has happened in the Dutt family in the recent past, one wonders if he would have voted for his sister Priya Dutt or her rival parties. Well...your guess is as good as ours!

Ranbir Kapoor, dressed in a smart pink shirt was among the younger breed of actors who came to vote. The actor sported a completely new bearded look which is supposedly for his role in Shimit Amin's next with YRF, rumoured to be titled Rocket Singh- Salesman Of The Year.

'Serial Kisser' Emraan Hashmi was also spotted at the voting centre. The actor dressed in a green checked shirt obliged the hungry photographers by posing for a quick snap.

The original 'Dream Girl' of Bollywood, Hema Malini, turned up with her daughter Esha to cast her vote. The mother- daughter duo caused a flutter among the shutterbugs who couldn't stop asking Hemaji for bytes. After all, considering Hemaji is an active politician herself, they were all eager to hear from her about her views on the elections this time.

After the mother-daughter duo, it was the turn of the father-son jodi of Yash Chopra and Uday Chopra to cast their vote. While both Yashji and Uday posed for the cameras showing their inked finer, we can't help but wonder why Uday is doing carrying a red rose in his hand? Someone needs to remind him that today is V-Day stands for Voting Day and not Valentines Day.

Jail not based on Dutt's life: Bhandarkar

Madhur Bhandarkar has denied that his next movie, Jail, was inspired by the troubled life of Sanjay Dutt.

"The film is not at all inspired by Sanjay Dutt's or anyone's life. It is a common man's perspective about how he gets into jail and how he gets stuck in a situation,” Madhur told reporters.

“It is about a middle-class family boy working in the corporate sector and how after one sudden incident, he goes to jail," said Bhandarkar.

Bhandakar is famed for the authenticity of his films and is trying to gain permission to film inside real prisons.

"I'm working towards shortlisting three or four jails, but I have to first get the permission to shoot there,” said the man who directed Page 3, Chandni Bar and Fashion.

“I want to shoot in real jails to bring authenticity to that narrative. As of now, I have been to two jails in Dehradun (Uttarakhand) and to the Yerawada jail in Pune," he said.

In front of Bhandakar’s camera will be Neil Nitin Mukesh and Mugdha Godse.

This is Bhandarkar's second film with Mugdha after Fashion, while he is teaming up with Neil for the first time. But the director says he is confident that the young actor will pull off the role.

"I saw this boy in Johnny Gaddar. He has a very smart face but at the same time, he has some fragility too. That's why I cast him. His face is so close to Parag Dixit, the protagonist of my movie," said Bhandarkar.

Manyata reveals why she is not Sanju’s fan

Manyata and Sanjay celebrated their first anniversary. This couple went through a lot of good and bad phase in last year. Manyata recalls few interesting memories of their relationship.

Revealing about their first meeting Manyata says, “We met nine years ago, for six years we were friends and we were seeing each other only for the past three years but nine years is along enough time to know someone enough to know that you want to be with them forever.”

Speaking about the huge 19 year age gap between the two Manyata said “I have always been mature for my age and Sanju has always been a little childish for his age, so it makes no difference now.”

Manyata revealed that though Sanjay has a huge fan following, she had never been a fan of her actor husband.

When asked how she relates to Sanjay as an actor, she quickly replied “The day I start relating to Sanjay Dutt as an actor, I don't think so my marriage will work. I relate to him as a person. Ki subah uthke mujhe autograph nahin lena hai, nashta banana hai”

Mehbooba

New York – a city of affluences and grandeurs…an ideal place for the handsome, successful and very rich Shravan Dhariwal (Sanjay Dutt). A business tycoon, Shravan has everything one can dream of having and what he doesn’t have, he buys it. A winner all the way with an envious lifestyle makes him the most eligible bachelor around. He loves being in the company of beautiful and desirable women. His charm and money gets him any beauty he desires till he meets Varsha (Manisha Koirala).

Varsha is an Indian girl who values self-respect and morality much above the money and glamour of America. She is the first girl in Shravan’s life who says no to his advances. Shravan is not a guy who would take NO for an answer and starts showering Varsha with presents and gifts that she keeps refusing, which are then followed by costlier gifts. Unmoved by the money being showered on her, Varsha insults Shravan in front of a few thousand people which comes as a jolt to him.

For the first time in his life Shravan wakes up to the fact and is made to understand that like everything else, women are not commodities that he can buy by showering gifts on them. He realizes his mistake and apologizes to Varsha asking for her forgiveness. To make amends for his misdeeds, he goes to meet Varsha’s father and express his love and respect for her. He asks for Varsha’s hand in marriage. Varsha’s father convinces her that he is a changed man now and genuinely loves her. After much deliberation, Varsha agrees and they get engaged. They take off on a holiday and their romantic sojourn ends in lovemaking.

Varsha’s beautiful dream comes to a shocking end when Shravan tells her that his love for her was just a drama to get engaged so he could sleep with her – ‘Every woman has a price tag, some sleep for money and some fools like you for the promise of marriage’. Heart broken and shattered, Varsha’s whole world collapses around her. She leaves the country and goes as far away as possible from Shravan Dhariwal to start a new life.

Shravan is summoned to his hometown in India by Maasa (Reema Lagoo),as his younger brother Karan (Ajay Devgan) has decided to get married. Karan settled in Europe, is in complete contrast to his brother. They are like two sides of a coin, emotionally attached but poles apart. Intrigued as to who his brother is so smitten by, Shravan keeps pestering his brother to tell him more about the love of his life. Karan describes Payal as an angel, a goddess he is madly in love with. A girl with amazing charm and beauty like none other. It’s virtually impossible for him to stop praising her. As the marriage day arrives closer, Payal arrives from Europe. Shravan meet Payal. Payal is none other than Varsha.

Is this a plan by Varsha to teach Shravan a lesson? Or is this fate playing a leveler in Shravan’s life? Why did Varsha change her name? What happens when Karan comes to know what happened between Varsha and Shravan? Will Shravan stop Karan from getting married to Payal aka Varsha? Who will Varsha / Payal marry?

So many questions to be answered…this is the story of Afzal Khan’s Mehbooba.
